A worked example is not a forecast

A worked example explains a relationship rather than predicting an outcome. Learn to inspect hypothetical inputs, reproduce calculations and test their limitations.

What an example can establish

A short calculation can make a complicated idea understandable. A tariff on a hypothetical shipment shows why the border charge and the retail increase need not match. A two-period return shows why equal gains and losses do not cancel. The value comes from isolating a relationship, not from pretending the example predicts a real outcome.

That distinction must be explicit. A round number in an educational example is not a current market quote or an estimate for a named company. When an article uses an illustrative automaker, it should say so rather than allowing readers to assume the figures came from Tesla’s accounts. Real disclosures and invented teaching values belong in visibly different categories.

Assumptions and limits

Assumptions determine what the calculation means. Does a savings example assume deposits at the beginning or end of each month? Is the annual return effective, or a nominal rate divided into periods? Are taxes and fees included? Two calculators can display different results because their assumptions differ rather than because either made an arithmetic error.

A good explanation exposes those assumptions before asking readers to interpret the output. It also describes what was left out. A constant inflation scenario does not reproduce the actual path of a household’s grocery bill. A return calculation without withdrawals cannot describe every retirement account. A simple model should be useful within its limits, not decorated with a false sense of precision.

Sensitivity and precision

Sensitivity is often more informative than a single answer. Lower the assumed return, raise a cost or reduce utilization and see which conclusion changes. If a business case works only under one unusually favorable combination, that dependency is part of the finding. Hiding it behind a polished final figure makes the analysis weaker.

Precision should follow the evidence. A result shown to two decimal places can be arithmetically correct while the assumptions remain highly uncertain. The decimal places do not solve that uncertainty. In editorial work, separating calculation accuracy from forecast confidence is one of the simplest ways to avoid overstating what a reader has learned.

The question a useful calculation leaves behind

Our tools are intended to make relationships reproducible. They do not select investments, promise returns or replace qualified advice. The most useful outcome may be a new question about an assumption rather than a larger number on the screen. That is a successful use of a calculator, not a limitation to conceal.

Readers should be able to repeat the example using the same inputs and obtain the same answer. If they cannot, the discrepancy deserves investigation before the result is reused.
